New Category coming: The people in my life

I have been meaning to start a new category here but have not had the time to start a post to put in it.  The people I Know and have known have their own stories to tell, and I wanted to write about how they came into my life and how things went.  Friends from childhood, batchmates from high school.. the org mates from college.. the friends I had in law school.. the people I”ve worked with.. past loves.. the fling/s (I haven’t quite decided if I will own up to that..LOL) .. in short, the people in my life.  (Which is what I had hoped to name the category.)

Now let me just decide who’s going first..

Pardon the Layouting Glitch

For some reason the “lift” from Microsoft Word didn’t go quite well when I posted here, so pardon the single paragraph entries of yesterday.  (I will correct them over the weekend.)

Friday!!! As you can see I’m in no hurry to leave the house but I’m about ready to do so.  Thanks to Nina who corrected my mistake below.  Thinking Memorial when it’s Labor Day.. And yes, I will check that Photo Blog of Paris you recommended.  (Although I hardly have time to bloghop as it is!)  And speaking of Paris.. I’ve been doing a lot of planning on that but that’s to be said in another post.

I just got word I’m being driven to work.. now I’m smiling from ear to ear.  Nothing beats not having to go on the bus and subway on a wet day like this.  It’ll probably be a short day after all.  Happy Friday, everyone!

40th Birthday Brainstorming

It’s just over a month away but we’re still trying to decide on the size and theme.  Sit down dinner in a private room?  A small party in a hotel suite?  Alternative venue?
Alan’s given up on the dancing – that will take us away from Manhattan where half his guest list would come from.  (A majority of the people who live in Manhattan don’t own a car because it just isn’t necessary – save for those who make regular trips outside the city, perhaps to summer or winter homes in such destinations as the Hamptons, etc.  Also, parking is such premium space so much so that it is very costly to rent a garage space.)   WengT had suggested a martini party which would appeal to Alan because he loves whipping up his favorite lychee martini.  We will probably have a martini station, but that gets people drunk faster. LOL.. Thanks for the suggestion, Weng. I would find it easier to pull off if we were allowed the use of a suite in Alan’s hotel.  I already know I’m doing an 80s party (both he and I and our friends belong to that era), and I’m doing a CD invitation.  I am going to design the cover/container much like what I did for my mother-in-law’s 75th birthday (which was a fold-in four-flap envelope) and the good news is, I have a ton of artwork/ paper patterns to use now that I am into digital scrapbooking. I just need to know the venue. I already have an idea of the food I’m serving, and we have decided on the souvenir.  We just need to know how many.  (A half bottle of merlot from our favorite Rivendell WInery would be perfect, label customized for the occasion.)   If we hold it in the suite, we can have more games.  If we’re stuck with a restaurant or bar, we’ll stick with socializing. I’m still surfing for party venues in Manhattan.. say for 30-50 people.  Most of the venues I’ve seen are for much bigger parties and functions, but I know I’ll find what I’m looking for in time.  Now if only Alan would finish that guest list he promised me…

Thoughts about the long weekend

I decided I’d take the express bus even if it wasn’t with Alan if only because the 7train homeward was bound to be crowded.  With the US OPEN on, there is a bigger volume of commuters heading towards the second to the last subway stop on the route I usually take locally.
Turns out I would’ve decided to go this way even if it was another time of the year because there was a major delay on the Main Street bound 7 train due to a sick passenger.  So that was that. The best thing about the express bus is that if I’m lucky enough to get on the newer bus, I get a two-seater row all to myself, and the seats are layouted in such a way that I’m assured privacy.  Time to blog… (although part of me was thinking about scrapping.. again..) I’m looking forward to the weekend because it’s a long weekend for us, with Monday being Labor Day.  It’s actually my last holiday before Thanksgiving as my company doesn’t observe Columbus day. We didn’t really make plans for any trips but we’re planning to take the family out on our usual weekend jaunts.  I have been asking Alan to bring Angel to the Central Park Zoo, and if the weather cooperates, we just might make it this weekend.  If it’s rainy and gloomy, I want to bring Angel to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan where Clifford the Big Red Dog is featured for the season.  It’s across the street from the famous Café Lalo (of You’ve Got Mail fame) where we love their cakes, tea, and coffee concoctions.  (Important note:  This is one of the few establishments of its stature who don’t accept credit cards.  Cash only.  No reservations either.  Being a tourist attraction of sorts, there’s usually a line. The good news is, they’re usually open late.) I’m hoping the boss sends me home early tomorrow as he usually does the Friday before a long weekend.  If I can get away with doing my grocery Friday evening to get that chore out of the way, I will.  The best part of it is, I get to sleep later or nap during the day.  Can’t wait.

Craft Report: Busy Bee that I am

I promised myself I’d carve out some time to write but I’ve been busy scrapbooking again.   I didn’t realize it can get so addicting, with this burning desire to keep going with the layouts just so I can make substantial progress.  I’m just so glad I had put the paper scrapbooking on hold because doing the layouts digitally is so much easier and more efficient.  I don’t have to worry about wasting the paper by cutting it wrongly, or of getting the proper add-ons and embellishments.  I’ve taken to just layouting the pictures and backgrounds first, and I’m just going to worry about the captions and journaling later.  (For the uninitiated, “captions/titles” are main headings and “journaling” would be the actual explanation or full text relating to what you see in the layout.)

I’ve noticed that these days, I’ve been taking pictures with the thought in mind of eventually using them in a scrapbook layout.  It’s almost like imagining the picture pasted onto a scrapbook page.  I still cannot do the layouts totally digital because I’m a souvenir freak.  I pick up napkins with restaurant logos, tickets, flyers, brochures, giveaways, maps.  I even brought home a free paper from Paris which I must definitely add to my final layouts.  I have a ton of postcards I bought, as well as clippings from the tourist magazines available at the hotel.  (I should’ve bought a newspaper even if it were in French!)  I even found freecards which are a form of advertising on postcards distributed in cafes, restaurants, museums, etc.  I also like seeing the ribbons, trims and other add-ons for real instead of just as pictures.

I cannot wait to start printing out the layouts and actually rendering them final.  However I want to do that all with the same paper stock so I’m not going to start until I am definitely at least halfway through.  At the rate I’m going, that should be before September is out. Funny how I had been stalled big time but now I’m just buzzing through and loving it!
